Conversations that Make a Difference for Children and Young People: Relationship-Focused Practice from the Frontline
In this unique book, international trainer and consultant Lisa Cherry invites professionals from education, social work and healthcare to engage in conversations on a range of pertinent topics and issues affecting children and young people today.
Divided into three main parts, which introduce attachment, adversity and trauma, each discussion places an emphasis on emotion and the understanding that we have as humans for compassion, empathy and connection. By encouraging collaboration between sectors and exploring a range of intersecting themes, the conversations take the reader on a winding journey to broaden their depth of thinking, reflect on their practice and to consider the central message: that we can bring about social change, one interaction at a time.
This book is a call to action and an opportunity to look around and decide what kind of service we want to provide, what kind of community we want to live in and what sort of legacy we want to leave. At a time of ever-present social and political challenges, this book will stimulate conversations on current practice and professional development for the future and is a must-read for everyone working with children and young people.

“I haven't been able to put this down! It covers attachment, adversity and trauma through a mixture of reflections, discussion points, poems and written conversations. Reading them, I feel like I was there! It is well referenced and provides further reading for each section.
As well as giving personal accounts it also uses theory in a very straightforward way, for example Bronfenbenner's ecological model and Porges Polyvagal theory.”

“I had this book in my basket for weeks, waiting for payday and trying to finish the book I had 'on the go' already; this beautiful book was worth the wait. I took it with me to a Yurt holiday, with family and friends, and read it cover to cover in 3 days...while also doing holiday stuff with kids etc. My highlight pen was an essential companion as I will be re-reading sections that landed with me. I would really recommend this book to anyone who works with children because it echos what I hold in my heart, that relationships are the work and what we do matters.”

“If you work with children and young people please take the time to read this book. I was deeply moved by the passion and deep care each of the practitioners have for ensuring the services they offer are steeped in the values of attachment and relational practice. There is so much to take away from this. If you are exploring and reflecting on how you want to be in the world and the services you offer which will truly make a difference, then start here.”
